This time, we visited “T-House,”
the dedicated international student dormitory of Teikyo University.
Opened in April 2022,
this dormitory is conveniently located just a 6-minute walk
from Teikyo University’s Hachioji Campus,
and an 8-minute walk from the Tama Monorail station.
Residents can enjoy private rooms as well as well-equipped shared spaces
such as lounges and kitchens.
We interviewed two Resident Assistants (RAs)
who help create a vibrant dorm community
to learn more about the appeal of dormitory life.
Profiles
Y
Second-year student in the Faculty of Economics at Teikyo University
(from Tochigi Prefecture)
T
Graduate student in the Graduate School of Literature at Teikyo University
(from Romania)
What made you decide to enroll at Teikyo University?
Y
One major reason was that I wanted to study in Tokyo.
As I researched universities,
I also became interested in interacting with international students
and engaging in global exchange,
and Teikyo University seemed like a great fit.
T
I have been studying Japanese since I was 13 years old,
and I previously studied abroad at a university in the Kansai region.
However, I wanted to learn more about Japanese culture and language,
preferably in the international environment of Tokyo.
Since Teikyo University suited my research interests, I decided to enroll.
What made you choose to move into T-House?
Y
My first introduction to T-House was through a brochure
included with my Teikyo University acceptance letter.
I had always wanted to become friends with international students,
so while considering dormitory life or living alone,
I thought living close together would make it easier to build friendships,
so I decided to give it a try.
T
I learned about it through the university website.
T-House looked new and impressive,
and I chose it because of its convenient location
and reasonable transportation costs.
How has your experience living at T-House been?
Y
There are many opportunities to interact with international students,
so every day is enjoyable.
In fact, there are nearly 60 international students living in the dormitory.
T
The campus is close by, and the building is new,
so it’s very comfortable to live here.
I’ve been able to interact with many students and make friends.
We feel close to one another, almost like a family.

Y
It only takes about five or six minutes to get to campus,
and it’s also nice that there are many shops along the main road.
There’s an OK Store supermarket across from the dormitory,
nearby convenience stores like Seven-Eleven and FamilyMart,
and plenty of restaurants as well.
T
At first,
I was a little concerned that the rooms didn’t have sinks or similar facilities,
but after actually living here,
I realized it’s convenient not having to clean the water facilities myself.
I think it’s a big advantage because it gives me more time for other things.

Do you have any favorite places in or around the dormitory?
T
My favorite spot is the nearby Oguri River.
It’s a bit cold in winter, but in summer the temperature is just right,
the moon looks beautiful, and I often go there for walks.

T
I also like the shared kitchen.
Especially the one on the first floor, since not many people use it,
it’s quiet and I can use it comfortably.

Y
I spend a lot of time in the first-floor lounge.
Compared to the kitchens on each floor,
more people gather there, which I enjoy.
We even watch baseball games together.

What kinds of events have you held this year?
Y
This year, with COVID-related restrictions lifted,
we were able to hold welcome parties and barbecue events.
Around move-in season, we also organized a photo rally
to help residents discover the local area and build connections.
About 30 people participated.
T
In the future,
we’d also like to hold events together with other dormitories.

Finally, could you share a message
for high school students considering Teikyo University?
Y
Unlike living alone, the biggest attraction of T-House
is being able to live together with international students.
It broadens your opportunities to connect with people from different backgrounds,
so I especially recommend it to people
interested in international or multicultural experiences.
T
The international atmosphere here is very strong,
and it’s truly a place where you can grow as a person.
It’s perfect for anyone who wants to broaden their perspective.
I used to be a rather shy person, but before I knew it,
I became comfortable talking to others and started enjoying conversations.
At T-House,
it was clear that multicultural exchange takes place naturally in everyday life.
This is one of the greatest attractions of dormitory life,
as described by the students themselves.
With many convenient facilities nearby,
the living environment is also highly fulfilling.
Above all, it was impressive that even the students working as RAs
highly regarded this dormitory as “a place where you can grow.”

Next time,
we’ll continue exploring and reporting on various university dormitories.
Stay tuned!
